- Available for beginners are the Ultimaker Original and the Ultimaker +.
- German RepRap X400 can be used after a personal demonstration from Andreas Kahler. An appointment can be made with him after some experience with the Ultimakers.
3D Printer Preparation
- The nozzle should be heated before any filament is either inserted or removed from it. Check that the filament is fitted with a dust collecting tube before it is fed to the machine. After the filament is fed, make sure that the clips that holds the filament against the feeding gear is properly fastened.
- Also make sure that the roll of filament is not loose but in tension to avoid it tangling during the print.
for Ultimaker Original:
- The bed should be covered with blue tape to reduce the print from sticking to the bed.
- The bed can be unmounted from the machine.
- When starting a print, it is generally a good idea to check for that the bed is level. The bed can be leveled by first homing the nozzle and adjusting the 2 screws at top and 2 at the bottom of the bed.
- Note that the fan starts not at the very beginning of the print.
- Observe the first few layers to catch unwanted results.
- During the print the speed and temperature settings can be changed.
If a jamb occurs,
- check that the filament is fed properly into the machine.
- Erosion of the filament can prevent it from being fed into the printer. In which case, take the filament out and trim it so that when it is fed back into the machine, the damaged part is fed past the feeding gear of the printer.
- Loosen the clip at the feeder and push the filament manually until the material comes out smoothly.
- If the material does not come out, heat the nozzle to 240°C briefly and try pushing the filament.
- If still no material comes out, try the acupuncture method with a small needle.
- DO NOT heat the machine over 240°C
- DO NOT print faster than 150% the default Cura setting.
- DO NOT attempt to repair the machine yourself.
- DO NOT remove out the bowdentube.
CURA Expert Settings
- Use Cura version no later than 15.04.3
- Download from Ultimaker site.
- Under menu option “Machine” choose (“Ultimaker Original +” or “Ultimaker Original”)
- Under menu option “Expert” choose “switch to full settings…”.
- Start from the default settings. (When changing settings, follow pop-up suggestions from Cura.)
- Import file (by dragging and dropping into screen of from the menu option “File”)
- Rotate/Lay Flat, Support
- View in layer mode to see printing path, the structure of the fill density, and the number of layers.
- Layer height and shell thickness (multiple of nozzle diameter, usually 0.8mm)
- bottom/top thickness (multiples of layer height, recommended no less than 3x)
- fill density (the default setting of 20% is in most cases sufficient. Do not fill more than 50%. The denser the print setting, the more risk of it warping.)
- Print speed: 50 mm/s
- Print temperature: 210°C
- Bed temperature: 70°C
- Adjust setting for Support and Brim according to the overhang of your printed geometry.
- Create G-code by choosing “Save GCode” from menu option “File” and save onto SD-Card.
Tips and Tricks
- Print very slowly in the beginning.
- Over the machine with the white panels to stabilize the temperature in the printer.
- Lesser the infill, lesser the warping.
- Plan for a longer print time than suggested by Cura
- Print small at first. Larger prints are more complicated.
3D-Printing in FabLab
- Use the Online Calendar. Respect reserved time by other members, courses, and events.
- Don’t forget to use the white tag to leave your name and contact info.

- It is recommended to use PLA on the Ultimakers. Any flexible filaments, filaments with wood and other experimental material are not recommended.
